How to integrate automatic email notifications for new posts on Moodle forums?

Hello everyone,

I'm using Moodle to manage Poly Track courses, and I'd like to improve the learner experience by sending automatic email notifications whenever there's a new post or a reply in the course forum. I've tried enabling notifications in the Moodle configuration, but I haven't seen emails being sent regularly to students, especially in forums with a lot of activity.

I'd like to ask the community if anyone has successfully set up an automatic email system for each forum activity. I'm interested in the following:

How to properly configure Site administration → Plugins → Message outputs → Email to ensure stable mail server operation?

Is it necessary to set up a separate SMTP server (such as using SendGrid or Gmail SMTP) to increase reliability?

What's the best way to avoid sending too many notifications while still ensuring learners keep up with the content?

I'm using Moodle 3.11 and hosting it on a Linux VPS. Does anyone have experience or detailed documentation they could share with me? Thanks, everyone!
